Steel Rolling Mills

Rolling is the system of plastically deforming metal by passing it between rolls. It is the most widely used forming system, which provides high production & close control of final product. In the coursework of rolling metal is subjected to high compressive stresses because of the friction between the roll & the metal surface.Leonardo da Vinci invented the first rolling mills but only after a few centuries rolling mills became important for the steel industry. Modern rolling practice is attributed to Henry Cort who got a patent for use of grooved rolls for rolling iron bars.

A new 14” Rolling Mill with four 3-Hi and one 2-Hi stands was set up in 1989 at a new location in the outskirt industrial area of Ludhiana. Another rolling mill of 20” with four 3-Hi and one 2-Hi stands was added in 1991. An 18” Roughing Mill with 2 Stands is being installed. All the five stands of existing 14” Rolling Mill are being replaced with new roller bearing stands with mechanised transfer tables, which will further improve the quality of finished products. This will also increase the productivity from 8 MT per hour to 15 MT per hour.

Basic concept of the rolling mills
  •  The arc of contact between the rolls and the metal is a part of a circle.
  •  The coefficient of friction is constant in theory, but in reality it varies along the arc of contact.
  •  The metal is considered to deform plastically during rolling.
  • The volume of metal is constant before and after rolling. In practice the volume might decrease a little bit due to close up of pores.
